B’nai Adath has been a forerunner in the area of outreach and inter-congregational cooperation, within its neighborhood and the Israelite movement. Although our congregation is made up entirely of working-class families, for 10 years we provided the neighborhood with a free kosher soup-kitchen that served approximately 30 people each day. When demand for our soup kitchen grew to approximately 100 people a day as our building became more difficult to maintain we had to suspend its operations. We also provided counseling services out of our building for many years.
We still sponsor youth programs to help keep our children and our neighbor’s children focused on living successful lives rather than giving in to the perils of our under serviced neighborhood. Every winter we run a very successful coat drive for the homeless.
We look forward to again housing these and other programs in our synagogue when it is rebuilt.
